Max Fried’s Elbow Gives Out Again — Yankees’ Three Aces Still Haven’t Been Healthy at the Same Time

Max Fried's Elbow Gives Out Again — Yankees' Three Aces Still Haven't Been Healthy at the Same Time
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Max Fried came back July 22, looked like his best self — 1.82 ERA across five starts — and then his left elbow said no again. The Yankees placed him on the 15-day IL on August 17 with a bone bruise, the same injury that had already wiped out two months of his season back in May. Same diagnosis, second time, six weeks left in the regular season.

Same Injury, Twice in One Year

The move was backdated to August 14, the day of his last start against the Seattle Mariners: five innings, one run, four strikeouts, 88 pitches. Nothing looked wrong on the mound. The Yankees haven’t clarified whether the injury happened during that outing or whether it’s a lingering problem from his first IL stint in May, and they haven’t offered a timeline for his return.

The first time around, the bone bruise cost him almost exactly two months. When he came back, he was sharp — a 1.82 ERA and a strikeout rate near 32% in those five starts. Then August 14 arrived and the cycle started over.

Three Aces Signed, Zero Times All Three Have Been Healthy Together

The Yankees spent on pitching like no team in the 2024 offseason. Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodón, and Max Fried form one of the most expensive rotations in recent league history. As of August 2026, all three have never been available at the same time all season.

The same day Fried went on the IL, the Yankees activated Rodón — out since July 3 with left elbow inflammation — to take his spot in the rotation. Rodón starts Tuesday in Baltimore against the Orioles. It’s a swap, not a solution: one left-hander in, another out.

The timing makes it sharper. Fewer than six weeks remain in the regular season and the Yankees have the second-best record in the American League. Despite everything, their rotation carried the lowest ERA in the majors as of August 17 — 3.38 — a credit to the rest of the staff. But that number doesn’t answer the real question: what shape will their eight-year ace be in come October?

Can He Come Back Before the Postseason?

Fried would be eligible to be activated in late August if this injury turns out to be less serious than the first one. The problem is the first one didn’t look serious at the start either, and it turned into two months. The Yankees haven’t mentioned surgery or structural damage — a bone bruise is a different animal from the ligament damage that requires Tommy John — but they also haven’t put a return date on the board. Manager Aaron Boone was set to speak with reporters Tuesday the 18th, which figures to be the first real signal of whether Fried’s season is over or if October is still in play.

What Fried Has Been in 2026

Before this second IL trip, Fried had made 15 starts covering 86.1 innings with a 2.81 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and 79 strikeouts against 27 walks. His xERA sits at 2.54 — meaning the quality of contact he’s allowing suggests he’s even better than the ERA shows. He’s also at 2.8 WAR on the season. In 2025, his first year in New York, he went 19-5 with a 2.86 ERA in 32 starts and finished fourth in AL Cy Young voting.

The Statcast picture in 2026 tells the full story:

  • ERA: 2.81 · xERA: 2.54 (97th percentile)
  • WHIP: 1.00
  • Strikeout rate: 23.8% of batters faced
  • Opponents’ batting average: .197
  • Whiff rate: 24.6%
  • Average exit velocity allowed: 86.2 mph
  • Barrel rate allowed: 1.8% (99th percentile in barrels avoided)
  • xwOBA against: 97th percentile
  • Hard-hit rate avoided: 92nd percentile
  • Soft contact allowed: 94th percentile
  • Fastball: 93.3 mph, 2,160 rpm spin rate (10th percentile — one of the lowest in MLB)

He doesn’t overpower hitters with spin. He beats them with deception, soft contact, and command. When he’s right, he’s one of the best pitchers in the game. Right now, the Yankees just need to know if and when they’ll get him back.
