Miguel Cabrera of Venezuela is the only Latin American player in history to win the Triple Crown, reach 3000 hits, and hit 500 home runs. That trio places him among baseball’s all-time great hitters and caps a 24-year career where he won a World Series, claimed two Major League MVP Awards, and left his mark on Detroit, Arizona, and other organizations.

The 3000-Hit Milestone

Cabrera reached 3000 hits on August 30, 2015 wearing a Detroit Tigers uniform, becoming the 28th player in Major League history to achieve that mark. That hit came off the Tampa Bay Rays and capped a journey that started in 2003 with the Florida Marlins, continued in Arizona, and solidified in Detroit. Over his career, he compiled a .308 batting average, proof of his consistency as a contact hitter.

500 Home Runs: Power and Durability

Cabrera’s power was equally impressive. He reached 500 home runs in 2017, joining an exclusive club in Major League history. That combination of 3000 hits and 500 home runs is rare: only 8 players total have done it, and Cabrera is the only one of Latin American descent. His ability to hit for distance without sacrificing batting average set him apart from many contemporaries.

Triple Crown and MVP: 2012, the Perfect Year

In 2012, Cabrera won the Triple Crown of Major League Baseball—leading in batting average (.330), home runs (44), and RBIs (139)—with the Detroit Tigers. He was the first player to accomplish it since 1967. That same year he took home the American League MVP Award, capping a season few hitters ever experience in their careers.

Career in Perspective

Cabrera debuted in 2003 with the Florida Marlins at age 20 and played through 2023. He was a World Series champion in 2003 with Miami, a two-time MVP winner (2012 and 2013), and an 11-time All-Star selection. His defensive versatility—he played third base, second base, and the outfield—and his ability to impact the game in multiple ways made him one of the most complete hitters of his era.

Achievement Year Stat

Career Batting Average 2003-2023 .308
MVP Awards 2012, 2013 2
All-Star Selections Career 11
