Muñoz Is Unstoppable: 18 Saves, 101 MPH, and a Strikeout Against His Hometown Neighbor

Andrés Muñoz picked up his 18th save of the 2026 season in the most on-brand way possible: three strikeouts in the ninth inning, five pitches per batter, and a fastball that touched 101 MPH. The Seattle Mariners beat the Texas Rangers 6-4 on July 26, and Muñoz made the closing look almost routine.

Three Up, Three Down — and 101 MPH

Muñoz entered with Seattle ahead 6-4 and dispatched Evan Carter, Nick Lopez, and Alejandro Osuna in order. Fifteen pitches. Three strikeouts. One clean inning. That’s what the best active Mexican closer in MLB looks like when he’s locked in.

The velocity wasn’t a fluke. Muñoz has been sitting above 99 MPH for most of the season, and the 101 MPH reading on July 26 confirms he’s still in the same gear that earned him All-Star nods in both 2024 and 2025. For context: he posted a 1.28 ERA in 2024 and recorded 23 saves in 2025. The 2026 pace is trending past that.

Through his first 23 save opportunities this year, Muñoz has converted 18 — a 78% rate — solid production for any closer, let alone one working in the hyper-competitive AL West.

The Last Out: A Los Mochis Derby

The final strikeout carried an extra layer. Alejandro Osuna, 23, was born in Los Mochis, Sinaloa — the same city as Muñoz — and made his MLB debut with the Rangers on May 25, 2025. He’s an outfielder, not a pitcher, and he represents the next wave of Sinaloan prospects reaching the big leagues.

To be clear: Osuna was hitting as part of Texas’s lineup. Muñoz was on the mound. Two players from the same hometown, two very different roles — and on this night, a quick education from the veteran to the kid. Muñoz is 27 and an established closer; Osuna is 23 and still learning how to read elite-level stuff. The strikeout was an express lesson.

That the final out of the game was a Los Mochis vs. Los Mochis matchup isn’t some statistical coincidence. It’s the product of years of serious baseball development in Sinaloa.

Muñoz, the Season, and the Bigger Picture

Seattle also got home runs from Dominic Canzone and Randy Arozarena in the win, but Muñoz was the one who locked the door. The Mariners have built their roster around an elite bullpen, and Muñoz remains the most reliable piece of that unit.

The save totals tell the story: 22 SVs in 2024, 23 in 2025, 18 already by late July 2026. If he holds this pace, he’s looking at a new personal record — and a real case as one of the most consistent closers in the American League over the past three seasons.

For now, the July 26 line is plenty: 101 MPH, three strikeouts, one save, and a last out that tasted like home.
