Ohtani Tried to Give Tucker a Hitting Tip — Tucker Said 'I'm Just Watching'

On September 7, during the Dodgers‘ win over the Cincinnati Reds, cameras caught Shohei Ohtani walking over to Kyle Tucker in the dugout. Tucker was reviewing footage on a tablet — he was 0-for-3 at that point in the game — when Ohtani leaned in and said something. Tucker’s answer was short: «I’m just watching.» Ohtani laughed. The clip hit 1.6 million impressions on X and split the internet exactly the way you’d expect — half the replies called it a snub, the other half recognized it as standard modern baseball.

What Actually Happened in That Dugout

Tucker studying video on a tablet between at-bats isn’t unusual — it’s routine across all of MLB. Every team has analysts feeding those tablets with pitch sequences, pitcher tendencies and real-time strike-zone data. The best hitters in the game do it every single day. What is unusual is a four-time MVP walking over out of genuine curiosity to see what his teammate is watching.

Ohtani had just returned to the lineup that Monday after missing five games with a left knee issue, a right biceps problem and neck soreness. He came back and went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts. And still — there he was, standing next to Tucker, interested. Ohtani laughed. Tucker didn’t shut him out or look away; he answered. The scene reads a lot more like two teammates being curious with each other than any kind of slight.

The Man Doing the Asking Isn’t Just Anyone

Through September 7 of the 2026 season, Shohei Ohtani is slashing .277/.OBP/.OPS with a .902 OPS, 30 home runs and 80 RBI at the plate. His xwOBA sits at .399 — 99th percentile in all of MLB. His average exit velocity is 93.2 mph (97th percentile). Tucker, for context, signed a four-year, $240 million deal with opt-outs in January 2026, is a four-time All-Star and carries a .266 career AVG. He’s one of the best outfielders in the league. Ohtani just makes that look ordinary by existing.

That same Monday, it was confirmed that Ohtani won’t take the mound again in 2026 — his last start was July 3. But in 14 starts this year he posted a 1.79 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP, struck out 27.9% of batters faced, and held opposing hitters to a .180 average. All of that before deciding to shift his focus entirely to hitting.

Since he ramped up his pitching program on August 8, Ohtani is hitting .198 with a .690 OPS — below his own standard — and the Dodgers have still won five straight. The team sits at 87-57.

Why the Moment Matters Beyond the Clip

This wasn’t the first time these two have shared intentional work space. Back in February’s Spring Training, Ohtani threw a live BP session to Tucker on the Dodgers’ practice fields. What the dugout clip shows — short response and all — is that dynamic doesn’t stay in the spring. What social media read as a brush-off is probably just September baseball: a winning team, a hitter working through a rough game, and the best two-way player on the planet leaning over with genuine curiosity. Ohtani laughed. Tucker didn’t flinch. The Dodgers won 6-3. Tucker and Ohtani are the heart of a lineup chasing a three-peat. A quick conversation in the dugout, however it looks on a 15-second clip, is part of the job.
