Background
Evans grew up in Whittier, California and took a gradual path to the big leagues. A right-handed hitter and thrower, third base has always been his home. He made his MLB debut with the New York Mets on September 8, 2017, though his first cup of coffee was a rough one — he batted just .143 with zero home runs in 2018. He didn’t let that stop him.
Professional Career
After his time with New York, Evans landed in Pittsburgh and had the best stretch of his MLB life. In the shortened 2020 season, he hit .359 with a .931 OPS for the Pirates — numbers that turned heads. The 2021 campaign was harder: a .206 average, 5 home runs, 16 RBI and 23 runs scored in what would be his last extended MLB look. Since then, Evans has leaned into winter ball as his primary stage.

Winter Ball
Evans has made the Águilas de Mexicali his winter home over the past several seasons, and the results have been up and down — until now. In 2024-25 he hit .311 with 2 home runs and an .846 OPS in 16 games. The following winter he slipped to .222 with 4 home runs in 28 games. But in 2026-27, Evans is on a different level: .407 average, 2 home runs, 5 RBI and a 1.134 OPS through seven games.
He also made a brief stop with the Toros del Este in the Dominican Winter League (LIDOM) in 2024-25, going 1-for-12 in four games.

Still in the Game
At 34, Phillip Evans is the kind of player who keeps showing up. His MLB experience gives Mexicali a steady defensive presence at third, and his bat right now is anything but quiet. Winter leagues have long been a lifeline for players who refuse to hang it up — and Evans is making a strong case that he belongs on a roster.
