Shoki Oda is 18 years old, pitches for Yokohama High School — the same program that produced Daisuke Matsuzaka — and as of this week, two of the most powerful franchises in baseball are reportedly going after him. According to journalist @Punchoutpitch, citing Japanese outlet @yakyucosmo, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees are now the co-favorites to sign the most coveted pitching prospect from the 2026 Summer Koshien. Until recently, only one team had been publicly linked to him. Now there are two — and there’s already an offer on the table.
The number that put him on the map: 97 mph with the bases loaded
The Summer Koshien is Japan’s biggest high school baseball tournament — 80,000 fans in the stands, national broadcast coverage, and over a century of tradition. In August 2026, Oda delivered a 156 km/h (97 mph) fastball with the bases loaded in the sixth inning. That pitch is now the fastest ever recorded at Hanshin Koshien Stadium, breaking a record that had stood for 19 years.
But the velocity wasn’t the only thing turning heads. In the Kanagawa regional qualifier leading up to the tournament, Oda had already touched 157 km/h (~98 mph) and finished with a 0.47 ERA over 19⅓ innings. He barely gives up runs, and when the pressure peaks, his stuff gets better — not worse.

Why the Dodgers and Yankees, and why now

But the numbers line up, and @yakyucosmo now lists both franchises as co-favorites.
The route that makes this unusual
What makes Oda’s situation different from most top Japanese prospects is the path he can take. If he signs directly with an MLB club as an international amateur, he bypasses the NPB posting system entirely. That’s rare for a prospect of this caliber — it almost never happens with Japan’s best high school players — but it’s financially attractive for whichever team lands him: instead of paying a posting fee on top of the contract, they only pay the signing bonus.
The other option: stay in Japan
Oda isn’t obligated to leave. He’s projected as a first-round pick in the 2026 NPB Draft and is considered a top-5 prospect in that class. Staying means developing in Japan, building a career there, and eventually reaching MLB through the posting process — the same road Yamamoto, Sasaki, and Matsuzaka himself traveled. (Matsuzaka, of course, came from this same Yokohama High program.)
