Dream Night in San Diego: Tatis, Machado, and the Padres Shut Out the Cubs 8-0 in the Wild Card
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Fernando Tatis Jr. took the first pitch from Matthew Boyd in Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series and drove it 405 feet to center field — the first leadoff home run in San Diego Padres postseason history. Petco Park, September 29, 2026. The Dominican slugger turned the franchise’s first ball of October into a piece of history before most fans had settled into their seats.

From a 55-Game Drought to October’s First Pitch

Tatis’s 2026 regular season had an uncomfortable chapter nobody wanted to dwell on: he opened the year with 55 games without a home run — the second-longest such streak in MLB history for a player with 40 or more career home runs. His first homer of the year didn’t come until May 30, against the Colorado Rockies.

But the Statcast numbers never lied. Even during the drought, the ball was leaving his bat hard. Tatis averaged 92.9 mph exit velocity on the season, landing him in the 96th percentile league-wide. It wasn’t a contact problem — it was luck and geometry. On September 29, the geometry lined up perfectly.

He finished the regular season hitting .289 with 25 home runs, 83 RBI, and 38 stolen bases in 159 games. Solid numbers, not spectacular. But Tatis has a different gear for October, and Game 1 against the Cubs was a loud reminder.

A Night the Padres Won’t Forget

Boyd’s changeup never reached the catcher’s mitt. Tatis read it, turned on it, and sent it to center. First pitch of the game. First leadoff homer in Padres postseason history.

Manny Machado, batting next, did the only logical thing: he hit a back-to-back home run to give San Diego the most explosive one-two punch to open a postseason game in recent franchise memory.

What followed was an 8-0 shutout built on two pillars:

  • Tatis at the plate — he finished with 2 hits, 1 home run, 3 runs scored, and 1 stolen base. In the seventh inning, he singled, stole second, and took off for home when the catcher’s throw sailed into left field. He slid headfirst into the plate and stayed on the ground celebrating as Machado ran over with arms wide open. That’s the image MLB used to lead their photo gallery from the night.
  • Michael King on the mound — he carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, racking up eight strikeouts against the team that led all of MLB in offense during the 2026 regular season.

Why October Is Tatis’s Stage

Tatis’s career postseason numbers aren’t those of a player who shows up in October hoping for the best. They’re the numbers of someone who turns October into his best month: .333 AVG / .432 OBP / .746 SLG / 1.179 OPS across 17 postseason games, with 7 home runs and 13 RBI.

For context: his career postseason OPS (1.179) is considerably higher than his 2026 regular-season OPS (.828). What looks like a high-upside player in August becomes a different kind of problem for opposing pitchers in October.

The Cubs finished the regular season 91-71, with home-field advantage over San Diego’s 89-73 record. Game 1 in San Diego was a sharp reminder that the standings don’t always write the script.

The Numbers Behind the Night

Tatis doesn’t show up in the elite Statcast rankings by accident. Here’s what the data says about his 2026 season:

  • 704 plate appearances
  • 25 home runs, 83 RBI
  • AVG: .289 | OPS: .828
  • xwOBA: .379 — 97th percentile (elite)
  • Exit velocity: 92.9 mph — 96th percentile (elite)
  • Barrel rate: 12.7% — 85th percentile
  • Hard-hit rate: 53.9% — 98th percentile (elite)
  • Bat speed: 76.4 mph — 92nd percentile (elite)
  • Sprint speed: 89th percentile

The regular season said good player. October said something else entirely.
