The Washington Nationals are the Major League Baseball team that has represented the U.S. capital since 2005. They play at Nationals Park, a modern ballpark located in the heart of Washington, D.C., and compete in the National League East. With a current record of 52-51, the Nationals are still looking to recapture the magic of their finest moment in recent history.

History

The Nationals were born in 1968 as the Montreal Expos, one of the first Major League expansions on Canadian soil. For 36 years, Montreal was home to a franchise that produced memorable moments, though it never managed to win a World Series. In 2005, the franchise relocated to Washington, D.C., a city that had been without a Major League team since 1971, when the Senators left for Texas.

The arrival in Washington marked a new beginning. The Nationals reached the postseason for the first time in 2012 and won the NL East in 2014, establishing themselves as a power in the National League East. The team built a competitive core around young talent and strategic acquisitions that kept them in contention year after year.

Titles and honors

The franchise’s peak came in 2019, when the Nationals won the World Series, defeating the Houston Astros in seven games. It was the franchise’s first title in Washington and the first in its modern history. That team was led by veterans like Max Scherzer and Patrick Corbin on the mound, and hitters like Juan Soto and Anthony Rendon.

Beyond the world championship, the Nationals have won the NL East on multiple occasions (2012, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019) and were a constant presence in October throughout the 2010s.

Key players

Max Scherzer is perhaps the most iconic figure in Washington’s recent history. The right-handed ace won three Cy Young Awards with the Nationals and was a key piece of the 2019 World Series. Juan Soto, acquired in 2021, quickly became a megastar, winning National League MVP in 2024 with the Nationals. Anthony Rendon was another crucial offensive pillar during the winning years.

Today, the team features young prospects like CJ Abrams, Dylan Crews, James Wood and Luis García Jr., who represent the future of the franchise and aim to lead Washington to another title.

Did you know?

Nationals Park, which opened in 2008, is known for its quirky «Racing Presidents» (the Racing Presidents), a unique tradition where men dressed as U.S. presidents race during the fourth inning. George Washington almost never wins, which has become an affectionate running joke among fans. In addition, the ballpark was designed with a sustainable focus and is one of the most modern in Major League Baseball.
