Background
Boca Chica has produced no shortage of big-league talent, and Fernández fits right into that tradition. After working his way through the minor leagues, he got his first taste of the majors with Washington in September 2021. A pure right-hander on both sides of the plate, he’s the kind of pitcher organizations build depth around — not flashy, but effective.
Professional Career
Fernández has spent his entire MLB career in the Nationals organization, working exclusively as a reliever. His best stretch came in 2026, when he posted a 2.25 ERA over 4.0 innings with a 1.25 WHIP and 3 strikeouts. The 2025 season was split into two stints: an early stretch where he carried a 5.40 ERA across 5.0 innings (1 win, 5 Ks), followed by a much sharper run with a 3.00 ERA in 3.0 innings (1 win, 4 Ks, 0.67 WHIP). The trend is clearly pointing in the right direction.

Winter Ball
Fernández has been a fixture in the Dominican Winter League (LIDOM) for several seasons. After three years with the Estrellas Orientales — including a solid 2024-25 campaign where he struck out 20 batters in 14.2 innings — he switched to the Toros del Este for the 2026-27 season and has been untouchable so far: 0.00 ERA across 3.0 innings with 3 strikeouts.

Fun Fact
Through his first three outings with Toros del Este in 2026-27, Fernández hasn’t allowed a single run. A 0.00 ERA in winter ball won’t make headlines, but for a reliever trying to lock down a bullpen spot in Washington, it’s exactly the kind of momentum that matters heading into spring.
