Who Owns the Miami Marlins? Bruce Sherman, Explained
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Bruce Sherman has been in charge of the Miami Marlins since August 2017 as chairman and majority owner of the investor group that bought the club. What makes him unusual in MLB ownership circles: he’s a value investment manager, not a media mogul or sports empire builder. He’s been at the helm for nine years and has held absolute control since Derek Jeter’s departure in February 2022.

Ownership at a Glance

  • Principal owner: Bruce Sherman
  • Controlling entity: Investor group led by Bruce Sherman, who has served as chairman, majority owner, and MLB «control person» since 2017
  • Purchase price (2017): $1.2 billion
  • Most recent valuation: $1.5 billion
  • Appreciation: 1.3x the original purchase price

Who Is Bruce Sherman?

Sherman was born in May 1948 in Queens, New York. His wealth comes from finance, not sports. In 1985 he co-founded Private Capital Management in Naples, Florida — an asset management firm that grew from $4.4 billion in assets under management in 1999 to $31 billion by 2005. He sold the firm to Legg Mason in 2001 for $1.4 billion and stayed on until retiring in 2009, after 23 years in the investment business.

In August 2017, Sherman led the group that acquired the Marlins from Jeffrey Loria for $1.2 billion, with Derek Jeter and Michael Jordan as minority partners. He became chairman and majority owner. He’s also a member of the Horatio Alger Association and an active philanthropist in Southwest Florida, focused on health and education.

How He Got the Team

The Marlins have changed hands several times, and each sale tells its own story:

  • 1993: H. Wayne Huizenga — $95 million
  • 1999: John W. Henry — $158 million
  • 2002: Jeffrey Loria — $159 million
  • 2017: Bruce Sherman’s group (with Jeter and Jordan) — $1.2 billion
  • 2026: Two undisclosed Florida-based family investors acquired a 15% stake in a deal that valued the franchise between $1.4 and $1.55 billion

Sherman’s 2017 purchase represented a historic jump: the franchise had gone from $159 million to $1.2 billion in just 15 years. In 2026, Sherman sold that 15% stake — while retaining full control — explicitly to pay down debt and hedge against a potential salary floor being negotiated for 2027.

What Else Does He Own?

Sherman doesn’t run a parallel empire tied to the team. His wealth traces back to Private Capital Management, the firm he sold in 2001. Today his focus is philanthropy in Florida and, notably, a yacht named Majestic. Unlike many MLB owners, he has no regional TV networks, real estate conglomerates, or media holdings connected to the club.

What he does control is the Marlins’ sporting and financial strategy — completely. With a payroll of around $79 million, the lowest in baseball, the Marlins still posted $53 million in operating income in 2025 — more than franchises with far bigger budgets, including the Braves and Cardinals.

Where to Watch Marlins Games

In 2026, the Marlins parted ways with FanDuel Sports Network Florida after Main Street Sports Group — the regional network’s operator — went insolvent and stopped making rights payments. MLB stepped in to handle local production and distribution. The direct-to-consumer product is MARLINS.TV, and games are also available on Spectrum, Comcast/Xfinity, Cox, DIRECTV, Fubo, and Verizon Fios. Sherman, unlike several other owners, does not own a regional sports network.

The Numbers Worth Talking About

  • The stadium situation remains Miami’s open wound: Jeffrey Loria built loanDepot park largely on the backs of taxpayers, then sold the team for $1.2 billion after buying it for $158.5 million. In 2021, Loria agreed to reimburse local governments $5.5 million for stadium costs; he had previously settled a separate dispute over the sale for $4.2 million.
  • Wayne Huizenga won the 1997 World Series, then immediately dismantled the championship roster, citing losses.
  • Derek Jeter — the public face and CEO — owned just 4% of the team. He left in February 2022, and former team president David Samson later claimed Sherman fired him.
  • In 2026, the Marlins ranked last in MLB by franchise value ($1.5 billion, 30th of 30) — but led the entire league in percentage growth, up 43% in a single year.
  • The proposed 2027 salary floor sits between $150 million and $171.2 million. The Marlins’ current payroll of ~$79 million is less than half that figure.

Where Sherman Ranks Among MLB’s 30 Owners

  • By franchise value: #30 of 30
  • By purchase price at acquisition: #6 of 27
  • By years in charge: #25 of 30

Note: All figures are nominal and not adjusted for inflation. Comparing a decades-old purchase price to today’s valuation overstates the real gain.

Sherman sits dead last in franchise value but owns the fastest-growing team in baseball by percentage. His original $1.2 billion investment has appreciated to $1.5 billion — without building a media empire or a real estate portfolio to prop it up. He’s the least visible owner in MLB, and the one with the tightest grip on his club. Since Jeter left, there’s no question who calls the shots in Miami.
