Yankees vs. Dodgers Has a 12% Shot at the World Series — and MLB Is Loving Every Bit of It

As of September 7, 2026, prediction market Kalshi — regulated by the CFTC — puts the odds of a Yankees–Dodgers World Series at 12%, making it the single most likely matchup of any combination on the board. New York is riding a Wild Card spot in the AL, sitting 2.5 games ahead of the Red Sox; Los Angeles is running away with the NL West. Nothing is guaranteed, but if it happens, baseball gets the most lucrative marketing scenario it could possibly dream up — and the numbers explain exactly why.

Two $9 Billion Franchises on a Collision Course

Before the fairness debate even starts, the figures deserve a look. According to Sportico, the Yankees are MLB’s most valuable franchise at $9.4 billion, with the Dodgers right behind at $9.05 billion. That gap was 46% back in 2021; today it’s down to 4%. For context, no other baseball team is even close to $6 billion.

On the revenue side, the Dodgers led all of MLB in 2025 with roughly $850 million, per Forbes, while the Yankees brought in $710 million. Only five franchises across all sports worldwide topped those numbers that year. When these two meet in October, it’s not just a baseball series — it’s a collision between the two biggest businesses in the sport.

Analyst Dan Clark put it plainly on September 7: «Many fans will disagree, but this is good for baseball. Two teams stacked with stars from the biggest cities, coast to coast. A marketing dream for MLB that will help grow the sport globally.» It’s a statement that sparks debate, but the data backs it up.

Sponsorships, Audiences, and 190 Countries

The marketing argument isn’t just gut feeling. In 2025, the Dodgers’ jersey sleeve generated $80.3 million in media value according to Nielsen — the most valuable uniform sponsorship deal in all of baseball. The Yankees’ sleeve came in second at $38.3 million. Together, that’s nearly $120 million in brand visibility before a single postseason game is played.

The Yankees sell merchandise in more than 190 countries, operating as a global franchise well beyond New York. The Dodgers, meanwhile, have Shohei Ohtani 🇯🇵 and Yoshinobu Yamamoto 🇯🇵 — two figures who give baseball a direct line into the Japanese market. A World Series featuring both clubs would reach audiences no other matchup could touch.

On the field, New York’s pitching rotation adds another layer: the Yankees’ bullpen and rotation combined for a 2.80 ERA in August 2026, third-best in MLB, with Cole, Fried, Rodón, Schlittler, and Warren all healthy at the same time for the first time all season. That kind of staff would make any World Series genuinely competitive.

The Other Side: What If It’s the Rays or the Brewers?

The counterargument is real and worth hearing. Plenty of fans would rather see a small-market team — the Rays, the Brewers, the Guardians — in the Fall Classic, precisely because it would prove baseball can win without spending big. It’s a fair point with real precedent: Tampa Bay reached the 2020 World Series on a fraction of New York’s payroll, and the conversation was genuinely compelling.

What the data doesn’t let you ignore is that from the standpoint of global TV audiences, sponsorship dollars, and growth in new markets, a Yankees-Dodgers matchup has no competition. The Dodgers won the 2024 World Series over the Yankees themselves, then repeated in 2025 by beating the Blue Jays in seven games — with Yamamoto taking MVP honors. A third straight title for Los Angeles, this time against New York, would be historically unprecedented.

For now, Kalshi also gives both Rays vs. Brewers and Rays vs. Dodgers a 9% probability, so the bracket is wide open. But if the postseason delivers what the market is anticipating, October could finally produce the matchup baseball has been waiting years for: the two most valuable franchises in the sport, face to face, with the Yankees carrying a 17-year championship drought into the series.
