Yoán Moncada has been one of the more intriguing infielders in baseball for the better part of a decade. A switch-hitter from Cienfuegos, Cuba, the third baseman has suited up for the Red Sox, White Sox, and now the Angels — logging a .263 career batting average and showing the kind of two-way impact that made him a hot commodity from the moment he arrived stateside.

Quick Facts

  • Full name: Yoán Moncada
  • Position: Third Base
  • Team: Los Angeles Angels
  • Number: 10
  • Bats / Throws: Switch / Right
  • Height / Weight: 6’0″ / 220 lbs
  • Born: May 27, 1995 — Cienfuegos, Cuba 🇨🇺
  • MLB Debut: September 2, 2016

Background

Moncada grew up in Cienfuegos and quickly established himself as one of the top prospects out of Cuba. That reputation earned him a deal with the Boston Red Sox in 2015 at just 19 years old. He made his big-league debut on September 2, 2016, and from day one his switch-hitting ability was the skill every front office wanted to unlock.

Professional Career

Moncada’s Boston years (2016–2019) were a steady build toward a breakout. He accumulated 124 home runs and 445 RBI across nearly four seasons with the organization. His peak came in 2019, when he slashed .315/.400/.900 OPS and earned his first — and so far only — All-Star selection.

He moved to the Chicago White Sox in 2020 and became a cornerstone of their offense. He slugged 55 home runs in 2021 and followed that with 27 home runs in 2022, though his average dipped to .226 that year. His final Chicago season in 2024 was limited, but he hit .275 in his appearances.

Since 2025, Moncada has been an Angel. He posted 12 home runs, 35 RBI, and a .234 average in his first Anaheim season. The 2026 campaign has been a rougher stretch — he’s hitting just .189 with 3 home runs so far. Over his career he has stolen 42 bases and held down third base for competitive rosters throughout the decade.

Stats at a Glance

  • 2026 – Angels: .189 AVG | 3 HR | 10 RBI | 9 R | .605 OPS | 1 SB
  • 2025 – Angels: .234 AVG | 12 HR | 35 RBI | 39 R | .784 OPS | 0 SB
  • 2024 – White Sox: .275 AVG | 0 HR | 0 RBI | 4 R | .756 OPS | 1 SB

Awards & Milestones

Moncada’s lone All-Star appearance came in 2019, the same season he was recognized as a force on both sides of the ball. That year stands as the clearest picture of what he can be when everything clicks.

One More Thing

Moncada is one of the rare true switch-hitters in today’s game — a skill that was heavily marketed when he signed. In practice, though, he has spent most of his career hitting from the right side, a reminder that in modern baseball, specialization often wins out over versatility, even when the versatility is real.
