Yankees Want Teruaki Sato at Third Base, But the Hanshin Tigers Hold the Key

Teruaki Sato just finished one of the greatest offensive seasons in Japanese baseball history: .306/.383/.609, 39 home runs, 106 RBI, 100 runs scored and 40 doubles in 143 games. His OPS sat at .991 and his wRC+ at 196 — meaning he produced offensively at nearly twice the rate of the average NPB hitter. That was good enough to win the Central League Triple Crown, making him only the ninth player in NPB history to do it — and the first Hanshin Tiger since Randy Bass pulled it off back-to-back in 1985 and 1986.

The Yankees have him squarely on their radar. So do the Mets, the Dodgers and the Phillies. The catch? Sato isn’t a free agent. He won’t have international free agency rights until roughly 2029, which means any MLB move this winter requires the Hanshin Tigers to post him first — and that decision hasn’t been made yet.

What Sato Did to Become the Most Wanted Player This Offseason

This wasn’t a fluke. Sato enters this winter on the back of two consecutive elite seasons: in 2025 he won the Central League MVP with 40 home runs and 102 RBI. Across six NPB seasons he has accumulated 163 home runs and 518 RBI — the kind of career track record that makes it clear the first big year wasn’t a one-hit wonder.

Sato reportedly communicated his desire to play in MLB during contract negotiations in December 2024. His January 2026 renewal — a one-year deal — was widely read as a bridge contract ahead of a posting. He’ll be 28 next season.

How the Posting System Works — and Why It Matters Here

Under the MLB-NPB posting agreement, a Japanese club must voluntarily offer a player to MLB teams. Once posted, franchises have a set window to negotiate a contract. If a deal is reached, the NPB club receives a fee: 20% of the first $25 million guaranteed, and 17.5% of the next tranche up to $50 million. Hanshin has historically been reluctant to post players early.

Postings typically open around mid-November, and a potential MLB deadline before December 1 could tighten the timeline considerably. As of mid-October, there’s been no official announcement from the Tigers.

What is known is that the Yankees didn’t arrive at this moment by accident. Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported that the organization spent close to a year rebuilding its relationships in Japan with exactly this offseason in mind. Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer has already predicted New York wins the bid, pointing to the club’s need for a corner infielder and drawing a direct comparison to Munetaka Murakami.

The Murakami Comp — and Where It Breaks Down

Murakami is the obvious reference point: the most recent NPB Triple Crown winner, he signed a two-year, $34 million deal with the Chicago White Sox and helped the club reach the postseason in 2026. That outcome raises the market ceiling for Sato.

But the comparison has real limits. Sato struck out 164 times in 614 at-bats in 2026 — a 26.7% strikeout rate — and his contact rate of 66.6% sits roughly 11 points below the MLB average. Murakami walked more and struck out less frequently, and the jump to big-league pitching tends to expose exactly those kinds of weaknesses.

Defensively, Sato has played most of his games at third base but also has outfield experience. Scouts have questioned whether his glove is MLB-caliber at the hot corner; several teams already see him as a first baseman or right fielder long-term. That question is especially pointed in New York, where Ryan McMahon is under contract at third base for $16 million next season.

  • 2026 slash line: .306/.383/.609
  • Home runs: 39 | RBI: 106 | Runs: 100 | Doubles: 40
  • OPS: .991 | wRC+: 196
  • Strikeout rate: 26.7% (164 K in 614 AB)
  • Career NPB: 163 HR, 518 RBI across six seasons

The talent is undeniable. The posting decision, the defensive fit and the strikeout concerns are the three questions that will define Sato’s market — and whether he ends up in pinstripes or somewhere else entirely.
