Aaron Judge walked off the field at Target Field in the sixth inning Wednesday with tightness in his lower right leg, per YES Network clubhouse reporter Meredith Marakovits. It was only his seventh game back since returning September 8 from a 99-day absence caused by a stress fracture in his right first rib — and the Yankees had activated him directly to the active roster, skipping any minor-league rehab assignment entirely.
What Happened in Minneapolis
According to the NY Daily News, Judge showed visible discomfort on a check swing as early as the third inning but stayed in the game until the sixth. When his spot came up in the batting order — runners on, Yankees trailing 2-0 — Heliot Ramos stepped in to pinch-hit. The organization offered no explanation during the game.
YES Network analyst and former Yankees manager Joe Girardi didn’t wait for an official statement. Watching Ramos head to the box, Girardi said on air: «there has to be something wrong» — ruling out any notion of a planned rest day from the start. The team confirmed the right leg tightness shortly after.
One important note: per Yahoo Sports, the leg issue is not directly related to the rib fracture that kept him out since June. They’re anatomically separate problems, and as of now there’s no official diagnosis beyond «tightness.»
Why the Timing Stings
Judge came back September 8 without a single rehab game — straight from live batting practice to the active roster. The question of whether his body was ready for full game load was never really answered. In his first week back he went 4-for-26 (.154) with 13 strikeouts. His only extra-base hit was the three-run home run on Monday, September 14, that helped the Yankees clinch a playoff spot with an 8-6 win over these same Twins.
Aaron Boone gave him a planned rest day Tuesday. He came back Wednesday and his leg gave out. That sequence — rest day, then injury — only deepens the concern.
The Numbers Behind the Story
Judge’s 2026 Statcast profile tells a fuller story than the traditional line:
- 283 plate appearances in 2026
- 18 home runs, 41 RBI
- AVG: .243 | OPS: .878
- xwOBA: .399 — what his quality of contact says he should be producing
- Exit velocity: 94 mph average
- Barrel rate: 20.9%
- Hard-hit rate: 57.5% (balls hit 95+ mph)
- Sprint speed: 31st percentile — his legs were already his weakest tool before Wednesday
That sprint speed number matters now more than ever. The leg was already the part of his game that had slipped the most, and now it’s the part that sent him to the dugout early.
What’s at Stake for New York
The Yankees sit 3.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East. Thursday is an off day; Friday opens a three-game series in Arizona on artificial turf. During the 84 games Judge missed, New York went 42-40 — one of the worst offensive stretches in the majors over that span. The franchise built its entire postseason case around one player staying healthy, and that bet is in question again.
