Aaron Judge isn’t going to Double-A. The Yankees captain has been out since late May with a stress fracture in his right first rib, and according to FOX Sports insider Ken Rosenthal, the plan is to activate him directly to right field — no rehab assignment, no minor-league games. The most likely target: the home series against the Colorado Rockies starting September 8.
What Rosenthal Reported
The report came during the Yankees-Padres broadcast in San Diego on September 5, 2026. Rosenthal said it plainly on air: «He does not want to go on a rehabilitation assignment, but he’s missed more than three months and he’s coming back as the right fielder.»
Manager Aaron Boone had already signaled the same direction: Judge could get some designated hitter starts, but right field is the base role. The full-time DH scenario that several outlets had floated while the rib healed is off the table.
Why He’s Saying No to Rehab — and He’s Done This Before
Judge addressed it himself during the week of August 28, in comments picked up by ESPN: «Why waste at-bats? Why waste anything in a minor-league game? I’ve been doing this for a while now, and I’ve got a sense of what I need to do on the field and manage it. So why waste at-bats in Double-A or Triple-A?»
It’s not a new stance. In 2023, Judge came back from a toe injury — 42 games missed — without playing a single rehab game. It worked. He’s applying the same logic now to a much longer absence. He was placed on the IL on June 5 (retroactive to June 2), transferred to the 60-day IL on July 18, and his last game action was May 31.
The most recent milestone before Rosenthal’s report: on September 4, Judge took live batting practice in the open field for the first time since May 31, adding throws up to 100 feet and outfield work during the West Coast road trip. Once the rib cleared him, the progression moved quickly.
Why the Timing Matters So Much
The Yankees aren’t sitting on a comfortable division lead — they’re in a tight race for the AL East title against the Tampa Bay Rays, with a four-game series still ahead in the Bronx in September. Giancarlo Stanton remains on the 60-day IL with a calf injury and his return timeline is uncertain, leaving a massive hole in the middle of the lineup.
Judge entered the 2026 season as the most dangerous hitter in the league and backed it up over his first 59 games: 17 home runs, a .908 OPS, and a .415 xwOBA that said his contact quality was even better than his .248 average suggested. The rib stopped him at the worst possible moment.
The three-time AL MVP (2022, 2024, 2025) and owner of the AL single-season home run record (62) isn’t the kind of player a contender replaces off the bench. The question now isn’t whether Judge comes back — it’s whether he gets back with enough runway for the Yankees to finish where they want to finish.
