Mark Attanasio went on The Show with Joel Sherman & Jon Heyman and said four words that every Brewers fan will remember: «This team was built, not bought.» He wasn’t being poetic. He was being accurate.
Milwaukee just swept the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-0 in the 2026 NLCS — the franchise’s first World Series berth since 1982 — and they did it without trading away a single top prospect at the August deadline. The Brewers outscored LA 21-11 across the four games. It wasn’t close.
The Trade They Walked Away From
On August 2, the Detroit Tigers put Tarik Skubal on the market with one condition: the Brewers had to include pitching prospect Logan Henderson. Milwaukee said no. Their offer centered on hitters — led by shortstop Luis Peña, then the No. 18 prospect in MLB Pipeline — but Henderson was never part of the conversation.
Detroit sent Skubal to Los Angeles instead, getting outfielder Zyhir Hope and pitchers River Ryan and Brady Smith in return. At the time, the popular take was that Milwaukee had blinked on a generational opportunity.
Attanasio admitted on the podcast that there were internal doubts. He asked GM Matt Arnold whether they could improve their offer after Detroit declared a best-and-final. The answer was no. The organization held firm — protecting Henderson, shortstop Jesús Made (now the No. 1 overall prospect in MLB Pipeline, who hit .271 with 14 home runs and 37 stolen bases at Double-A Biloxi in 2026), and outfielder Luis Lara, who signed a seven-year extension in June. This wasn’t stubbornness. It was a plan.
Skubal Was Great. It Didn’t Matter.
Skubal’s 2026 numbers were legitimate Cy Young material for the third straight year: a 2.72 ERA, 186 strikeouts, a 0.96 WHIP and 5.2 fWAR in 158.2 innings — all while missing six weeks due to elbow surgery. After the trade, he posted a 2.61 ERA over 10 starts for the Dodgers. The numbers were real.
So was the NLCS result. Skubal took the mound for Game 1 on October 11 and allowed two runs over five innings with seven strikeouts. He left with the loss in a 2-1 Milwaukee win. The Dodgers dropped all four games after that.
The players who actually decided the series? They came from within. NLCS MVP Jake Bauers hit .286 with six RBI in four games. Garrett Mitchell hit the go-ahead home run in the sixth inning of Game 4 off Tanner Scott to finish off Los Angeles. Neither arrived at the trade deadline. Both were already here.
What Comes Next — and Why the Decision Was Bigger Than 2026
With Henderson, Made and Lara still in the organization, Milwaukee heads into the World Series with one of the deepest farm systems in baseball. Attanasio made clear on the podcast that August wasn’t just about this season:
«It’s critical to look at how we got here and because I want to have sustained success, we had to do that by being very careful about how many prospects we gave up.»
There’s also an irony worth noting: Skubal hits free agency after this season as the best available starter on the 2027 market. There’s a real possibility he ends up signing with Milwaukee — the same team that wouldn’t pay his prospect price in August. If that happens, Attanasio wins twice: the pennant and the pitcher, without ever giving up Henderson to get there.
The Brewers finished the regular season 103-59. They didn’t buy their way to the World Series. They built it, prospect by prospect — and now they have the phrase to prove it.
