Cam Schlittler Is Having One of the Best Pitching Seasons in Yankees History — and the AL Cy Young Is His to Lose
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Two weeks from the end of the regular season, Cam Schlittler is sitting on a 2.01 ERA, 220 strikeouts, and a 0.90 WHIP across 30 starts for the New York Yankees — numbers the Bronx hasn’t seen since the Whitey Ford era. The AL Cy Young race is down to him and Dylan Cease, and the consensus is leaning hard toward the 25-year-old right-hander.

A Season Already Written Into Yankees History

Schlittler came into 2026 with a clear assignment: anchor the rotation while Gerrit Cole finished recovering from Tommy John surgery. What he did instead was something else entirely.

His 1.71 ERA over his first 16 starts was the lowest by a Yankees pitcher since Whitey Ford in 1964. He then passed Ron Guidry to become the Yankees pitcher with the most one-run-or-fewer outings in a single season in franchise history, reaching that mark in his 20th start. And his 2.01 ERA ranks as the fourth-lowest by a New York pitcher through 30 starts in a season since 1913. That’s not a relative stat. That’s one of the four best marks in over a century of Yankees baseball.

On September 13, beat writer Dan Clark — who has covered Cole, Severino, and Mussina at their peaks — put it plainly: «I’m running out of words to describe just how impressive Cam Schlittler has been this season. Consistent. Dominant. Reliable. Ace. Even those don’t seem adequate. He would be a thoroughly deserving Cy Young Award winner.» That’s not a hot take. That’s a verdict from someone who’s watched every inning.

Schlittler vs. Cease: Where the Cy Young Race Stands

The AL race is a two-horse contest. Schlittler leads in ERA, innings pitched, and WHIP. Cease has the edge in total strikeouts. That’s the entire debate.

MLB Network analyst Jon Morosi said on September 2 that «the innings, ERA, and WHIP favor Schlittler,» giving him «a slight edge.» MLB.com’s fifth expert poll backed that up with hard numbers: Schlittler received 25 first-place votes out of 35 experts surveyed, totaling 165 points. His 4.9 fWAR — nearly five wins above a replacement-level pitcher — leads all qualified AL starters.

The race isn’t over. Cease is still in it, and there are meaningful starts left. Schlittler faces the Mets at Yankee Stadium today, with another start scheduled for September 19 in Arizona. Every inning matters.

What Statcast Says About Why Hitters Can’t Touch Him

The numbers from Baseball Savant fill in the picture. Schlittler’s average exit velocity allowed in 2026 is 88.6 mph — the lower that number, the softer contact he’s giving up. His xwOBA allowed is .265, placing him in the 92nd percentile across all of MLB: the quality of contact he allows puts him among the 8% hardest pitchers to square up in the big leagues. Hitters are batting .185 against him.

His fastball averages 97 mph with 2,513 rpm of spin — 93rd percentile in velocity, 92nd in spin rate. The result: 28.9% of swings against him don’t make contact. He’s striking out 31.4% of batters faced (95th percentile) with a walk rate that sits in the 88th percentile for control.

The only areas where his Statcast profile isn’t elite are barrel suppression (42nd percentile) and hard-hit rate (39th percentile). But with an xERA of 2.91 — what his ERA «should» be based on contact quality — it’s clear that even accounting for those margins, this is still one of the best pitching seasons in the American League.
