Cam Schlittler: From Double-A to AL Cy Young Frontrunner in Less Than a Year
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A year ago, Cam Schlittler was pitching in Double-A. Today he has a 2.19 ERA across 26 starts for the New York Yankees and is firmly in the AL Cy Young conversation — one of two or three best pitchers in baseball. The rise isn’t just fast. It’s one of the most abrupt jumps anyone has seen in the majors in years, and the Statcast numbers make clear it’s the real thing, not a product of luck or soft competition.

From Double-A to the Bronx in Under Twelve Months

Some pitchers move through the system quickly. Schlittler’s case is something else entirely. In 2025 he was still logging reps in Double-A — two full steps from the big leagues. In 2026 he broke camp in the minors and ended up anchoring the Yankees’ rotation, one of the most demanding environments in professional baseball.

What makes the leap hard to fully absorb isn’t just the speed — it’s what he walked into: major-league hitters, October pressure hovering over every start, and a New York fanbase that has zero patience for mediocrity. Schlittler didn’t flinch. He did the opposite.

Why the Numbers Hold Up Under Scrutiny

The danger with any «prospect explodes» story is that the stats fall apart the moment you look closer. These don’t. Across 152.0 innings, Schlittler has struck out 189 batters while walking just 34 — a 31.4% strikeout rate paired with a 5.6% walk rate. That combination of dominance and command puts him in the 95th percentile in K% and the 90th percentile in BB% league-wide.

His fastball averages 97 mph with 2,502 rpm of spin — 93rd percentile in velocity, 90th in spin rate — and hitters are batting just .196 against him. His average exit velocity allowed sits at 88.4 mph: the lower that number, the softer the contact, and 88.4 mph is a figure plenty of established aces would happily take.

One distinction worth making: his 2.19 ERA is elite, but his xERA — the run prevention his contact quality actually deserves — is 2.92. There’s a measure of good fortune baked into the real ERA, as there is for any pitcher. But a 2.92 xERA in the 92nd percentile isn’t a fluke. That’s a pitcher who belongs among the best in the game, good bounces or not.

The Cy Young Case and What Comes Next

The fact that a pitcher with fewer than a full season in the majors is being discussed for the AL Cy Young says more about his performance than about narrative momentum. The award is decided by numbers, and Schlittler’s — 10-6, 2.19 ERA, 0.94 WHIP — are the numbers of someone who belongs at that table as a genuine candidate, not just a feel-good story.

The Yankees have found what very few franchises manage to land: a young power pitcher with elite command who is still in his first years of team control. The question is no longer whether Schlittler belongs in the big leagues. The question is how high he goes, and how fast.

The Numbers Behind the Rise

Schlittler’s 2026 Statcast profile from the mound:

  • 26 starts, 152.0 innings pitched
  • ERA: 2.19 · WHIP: 0.94
  • 189 strikeouts, 34 walks (31.4% K rate)

  • Whiff rate: 28.8% of swings miss
  • Batting average against: .196
  • Exit velocity allowed: 88.4 mph
  • Barrel rate allowed: 8.1%

How he ranks across all of MLB:

  • xERA: 92nd percentile (elite)

  • Walk rate (BB%): 90th percentile (elite)
  • Whiff %: 77th percentile
