Junior Caminero Pulled a LeBron on Cleveland After Sending Them Home in the ALCS
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Junior Caminero grabbed the ESPN mic on the Tropicana Field turf and let it rip: «Tampa is the best. Tampa gave me the opportunity to play here. Tampa, this is for you!»

It was October 19, 2026. The Tampa Bay Rays had just eliminated the Cleveland Guardians 7-3 in Game 6 of the ALCS, and Caminero — all of 23 years old — had just delivered, nearly word for word, the line LeBron James made immortal when he won the 2016 NBA championship. For Cleveland. The same Cleveland he had just sent home.

The line, the irony, and the player Cleveland couldn’t keep

Anyone who remembers that June 2016 night felt the echo immediately: LeBron in tears during a postgame interview, telling Cleveland the title was for them after 52 years without one. Caminero mirrored the structure almost exactly — just pointed in the opposite direction. With Cleveland’s baseball team freshly eliminated, the Dominican third baseman took the mic and spoke to Tampa.

The ESPN platform, the celebration moment, the emotion spilling over: all the same ingredients, just on the other side.

The irony runs deep. Cleveland signed Caminero in July 2019 as a 16-year-old prospect out of Santo Domingo for $87,500. He played one season in the Dominican Summer League for the then-Indians, and in November 2021, at 18, the organization shipped him to Tampa Bay in exchange for Tobias Myers — a minor-league pitcher who never threw a single pitch in the majors for Cleveland. Guardians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti publicly admitted in 2023 that it had been a bad trade. That’s putting it mildly.

What he did before grabbing the mic

Caminero didn’t arrive at that microphone empty-handed. In the seventh inning of Game 6, with Tampa leading 3-1 and Cleveland trying to claw back, he launched a two-run home run off reliever Cade Smith that pushed the lead to 5-1 and effectively closed the series. He finished the game 2-for-3 with a walk and that homer — exactly the kind of box-score line that in October decides who goes home.

The bigger picture was just as lopsided. The Guardians hit .194 with an OPS of .567 with runners in scoring position across the entire series. The Rays hit .311 with an OPS of .878 in those same situations. Cleveland led the series 2-1 at one point, but the last three games told a completely different story.

The Guardians’ World Series drought now stretches to 78 years — their last title came in 1948.

The mic moment wasn’t an isolated stunt either. When Tampa swept the Yankees in the Division Series, Caminero reportedly riffed on David Ortiz’s famous «Da Yankees lose» line. The LeBron bit in the ALCS was the next chapter in a postseason-long pattern of celebrations that blend pop culture and trash talk without crossing any real line.

The numbers behind the noise

Caminero doesn’t show up in the conversation by accident. Here’s what Statcast logged for his 2026 season — and why he hits the ball the way he does:

  • 702 plate appearances
  • 42 home runs, 101 RBI
  • AVG: .276 | OPS: .884
  • xwOBA: .364 — what his quality of contact says he should be producing
  • Average exit velocity: 92.7 mph
  • Barrel rate: 13.1%
  • Hard-hit rate: 49.7% (balls hit 95+ mph)
  • Average bat speed: 79.4 mph

Where that puts him across MLB:

  • xwOBA: 91st percentile
  • Bat speed: 100th percentile
  • Exit velocity: 95th percentile
  • Barrel %: 89th percentile
  • Hard-hit %: 91st percentile

Cleveland paid $87,500 for him in 2019 and traded him away at 18. On October 19, 2026, he hit a go-ahead homer to end their season and then borrowed LeBron’s script to rub it in. The layers on this one just keep going.
