Danry Vásquez Breaks His Silence After Indefinite LMB Suspension
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Danry Vásquez punched a player in the face and kicked him while he was on the ground during an August 2 Liga Mexicana de Béisbol game. The brawl sent Monclova Steelers first baseman Ryan Hernández to the hospital by ambulance with a broken right arm. The LMB handed Vásquez an immediate, indefinite suspension. The Tijuana Bulls released him from their roster the next day. Two days after the incident, the Venezuelan outfielder spoke publicly for the first time.

What Happened in the Fourth Inning

It was Sunday, August 2 — Game 3 of the series between the Tijuana Bulls and the Monclova Steelers, fourth inning. Vásquez got caught in a rundown between third and home. Third baseman Rodolfo Amador tagged him out — and that’s when things escalated.

  • Vásquez immediately punched Amador in the face.
  • When Amador was already on the ground, Vásquez kicked him.
  • Both benches cleared.
  • Monclova first baseman Ryan Hernández left the field by ambulance with a fractured right arm, a result of the melee.

Video circulating online appears to show Amador elbowing Vásquez first, before the punch. That detail is being debated. What isn’t up for debate: punching someone in the face and kicking them while they’re down is a disproportionate response that violates the rules of any league, regardless of what came before it.

The Suspensions

On August 3, the LMB’s Executive Office announced Vásquez’s immediate, indefinite suspension. The Bulls removed him from the roster. Tijuana pitcher Adonis Medina received a 5-game ban and coach Luis Ugueto got 2 games. Five Monclova players were also suspended.

Notably, Amador was not among those disciplined — a fact that opened a separate debate about whether the penalties were applied fairly across both sides.

Vásquez Speaks Out

Two days after the incident, Vásquez released his first public statement. It came with an indefinite suspension hanging over him and no team to report to.

His 2026 numbers weren’t good to begin with. Before the incident, he was hitting .143/.224/.190 in 14 games with the Veracruz Eagle (on loan since April 14) before being transferred to Tijuana on May 18. That’s a steep drop from his best LMB seasons: .328/.428/.520 with 11 HR and 60 RBI in 2023, and .339/.410/.530 with 6 HR and 57 RBI in 2024.

A Pattern That Goes Back Ten Years

This isn’t the first time, and that context matters.

In August 2016, Vásquez was a Double-A prospect with the Houston Astros affiliate, the Corpus Christi Hooks. He was arrested in Texas for physically assaulting his then-girlfriend, Fabiana Pérez, on a stadium staircase. He completed a diversion program, served no jail time, and Houston released him. The case stayed relatively quiet until 2018, when security camera footage became public. The reaction was swift: his contract with the Lancaster Barnstormers of the Atlantic League was terminated within days, and affiliated baseball in the United States permanently closed its doors to him.

In 2024, he received a one-game LMB suspension for a separate incident during the playoffs. He kept playing: he was part of the La Guaira Sharks’ championship roster in the 2023-24 LVBP season and represented Venezuela at the 2025 Caribbean Series in Mexicali.

He’s now 32, indefinitely suspended in Mexico, and carrying a record of three violent incidents over the past decade. The LMB ban applies only to that league — it does not automatically bar him from the LVBP or other Latin American circuits. That’s part of the story too.
