Umpire Emil Jiménez Sparks Controversy After Denying ABS Challenges to Two Latino Players in the Same Game
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

On August 8 at T-Mobile Park, home plate umpire Emil Jiménez denied Julio Rodríguez‘s ABS challenge request in the sixth inning of a Rays 3 – Mariners 2 game, ruling that the batter had waited too long. Manager Dan Wilson came out to argue and was ejected — his third ejection as a manager and second in four games. But what turned this into a bigger story happened one inning later: Jiménez also ignored a challenge request from Jonathan Aranda, the Mexican-born Rays first baseman, and this time it took another umpire stepping in for the appeal to go through.

What Happened in the Sixth and Seventh Innings

With a 0-2 count and two outs in the sixth, Steven Matz threw Rodríguez a 93.3 mph sinker that appeared to clip the top of the strike zone. Jiménez called strike three. Rodríguez touched his helmet almost immediately to request an ABS challenge — but the home plate umpire rejected it, saying the batter had taken too long.

The 2026 ABS Challenge system requires that a request be made «immediately after the umpire’s call, without assistance from the dugout or other players.» The catch: «immediately» has no defined time in seconds. It’s left entirely to the home plate umpire’s discretion.

Wilson came out, argued, and headed to the clubhouse to a chorus of boos. T-Mobile Park stayed hot on Jiménez for the rest of the night.

One inning later, Aranda — born in Tijuana and an All-Star in 2025 — tried the same thing on a Seranthony Domínguez pitch. Jiménez didn’t acknowledge that request either. This time, third base umpire and crew chief Doug Eddings stepped in, confirmed the challenge, and the result was clear: the called strike was actually a ball. Aranda got his challenge. Rodríguez didn’t.

This Isn’t About Team Favoritism — It’s About Inconsistent Protocol

Worth saying before this debate goes sideways: Jiménez didn’t deny Rodríguez’s challenge to help Tampa Bay. He turned around and did the exact same thing to Aranda, who plays for the Rays. What happened here isn’t bias toward either team — it’s uneven application of the same rule in the same game.

There’s also an important footnote on the original play: replays suggested Matz’s sinker may have actually caught the zone. Rodríguez’s challenge might have been a loser anyway. But that’s beside the point. The point is that the batter has the right to try, and that right was taken away from him.

The Juan Soto incident referenced on social media dates to July 2025, when Jiménez was the home plate umpire in a Mets–Padres game and drew criticism for a called third strike on Soto that ended with manager Carlos Mendoza getting ejected. That case was different — no ABS challenge was involved, since the system wasn’t yet operating as a full-league pilot — but it adds to the perception of an umpire who keeps finding himself at the center of high-profile controversies.

The Question MLB Still Hasn’t Answered

The ABS Challenge system arrived in 2026 specifically to take subjectivity out of ball-strike calls. The irony is that its biggest weakness — the undefined meaning of «immediately» — hands all that discretion right back to the home plate umpire. No stopwatch, no clear threshold. Every umpire decides when it’s too late.

Earlier this season, Aaron Boone was ejected in Tampa in a nearly identical situation: an ABS challenge denied by an umpire. The pattern doesn’t belong to one man or one team — it’s a crack in the rulebook that the league hasn’t patched.

Jiménez, who is Venezuelan, made his MLB debut on April 18, 2023, and was promoted to the permanent umpiring staff before the 2025 season. He’s been in the system for three years and has spent at least two of them collecting these kinds of episodes. The question fans are asking — «MLB, you need to look at what’s going on with this guy» — isn’t really personal. It’s the same question the league should be asking itself about the rule its umpires are applying.
