Professional Career
Grills worked his way through affiliated ball between 2016 and 2019, spending time at both Double-A and Triple-A with several organizations.
His best stretch at the Double-A level came in 2018 with the Hartford Yard Goats, where he made 16 appearances and posted a 3.90 ERA with 81 strikeouts in 85.1 innings — a workload that showed he could handle a meaningful role out of the bullpen.
In 2016, Grills split time between two levels. With the Corpus Christi Hooks (Double-A), he threw 94.2 innings across 16 appearances, striking out 69 batters with a 3.99 ERA. He also got a taste of Triple-A with the Fresno Grizzlies, where he was sharp in a smaller sample — 2.55 ERA over 17.2 innings.
The jump to Triple-A full-time in 2019 with the Albuquerque Isotopes proved tougher. In 14 games, he finished with a 5.70 ERA and 33 strikeouts — a reminder of how unforgiving that level can be for pitchers on the fringe of the majors.
Winter Ball
Caribbean winter ball has been a consistent part of Grills’ calendar, and some of his best pitching has come in those leagues.
His standout winter campaign was the 2016-17 Puerto Rico Professional Baseball League season with the Santurce Crabbers. In 8 appearances, he went 4-2 with a 2.09 ERA, striking out 28 batters in 43 innings — one of the cleanest stretches of his career at any level.
More recently, Grills joined the Toros del Este in the 2026-27 LIDOM season. Through 2 appearances, he holds a 2.89 ERA with 6 strikeouts in 9.1 innings. Early numbers, but encouraging ones for a lefty still competing at a high level.

Worth Knowing
Grills represents Canada on the professional baseball map — a country with a real tradition of pitching talent, even if it rarely gets the spotlight. His continued presence in Caribbean winter leagues says something about his commitment: no big-league call-up yet, but still working, still competing, still earning his spot on a roster every winter.
