That Swing, Though: Jose Siri Goes Viral for All the Wrong Reasons
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

On Wednesday, September 2nd, Jose Siri handed the internet its most-talked-about baseball clip of the night: a swing at an 86.5 mph cutter from Michael Fulmer that closed out the Yankees‘ 6-3 win over the Angels in ten innings. The strikeout was so eye-catching that @BigLeagueDigest labeled it on X as «the worst swing attempt of the season» — and the clip racked up over 96,000 impressions in just a few hours.

But behind the gif is a player who hit .353 with two home runs in August. That contradiction is exactly what makes Siri so hard to pin down.

One Cutter, One Swing, Game Over

Fulmer entered the tenth inning with New York up 6-3, needing one more out. Siri stepped in with the game all but decided. What followed — a 86.5 mph cutter spinning at 2,682 rpm and a swing the cameras will not let anyone forget — became the final out of the night.

@BigLeagueDigest posted the clip with one line: «Jose Siri gave the worst swing attempt of the season to end the game.» The internet did the rest: 96,000+ impressions and 1,085 likes within hours.

That strikeout sealed the series for New York. The Yankees took two of three from the Angels and sit at 79-60, still very much in the American League wild card hunt.

The Duality of «El Rayo»

Siri’s nickname isn’t just for show. His sprint speed ranks in the 99th percentile across all of MLB, making him one of the most explosive baserunners in the game. When he makes contact, it’s loud — his average exit velocity is 89.3 mph, with a 41.7% hard-hit rate, meaning more than four out of every ten balls he puts in play leave the bat above 95 mph.

The career-long issue is exactly what happened Wednesday night. Siri carries a 35.6% strikeout rate for his career — among the highest for regular outfielders in the league. In August 2026 that number climbed to 50% over eight games, and yet those same eight games ended with him hitting .353 with two home runs. When he connects, it counts. When he doesn’t, it’s spectacular.

The Angels, meanwhile, arrive at this point at 53-86, having dropped eight of their last nine games before the series finale, with Kroenke Sports & Entertainment having reached a deal to take majority control of the franchise from Arte Moreno. Full rebuild mode — and in that context, a role outfielder with Siri’s speed and intermittent power is the kind of piece that gets evaluated very differently.

The Numbers Behind the Clip

Jose Siri’s 2026 Statcast profile tells the story that traditional stats don’t always surface:

  • 194 plate appearances in 2026
  • 7 home runs and 23 RBI
  • AVG: .223
  • OPS: .672
  • xwOBA: .306 — what his contact quality says he should be producing
  • Average exit velocity: 89.3 mph
  • Barrel rate: 13.9%
  • Hard-hit rate: 41.7%
  • Sprint speed: 99th percentile (elite)

The Dominican outfielder is leaving a real footprint in Statcast’s radar — and in baseball, the numbers are what ultimately do the talking.
