Luis Gastélum Silences the Phillies With Four Outs and Three Strikeouts

Luis Gastélum walked out of the Busch Stadium bullpen on August 10 and handled real business: four outs against the Philadelphia Phillies, three of them by strikeout. The 24-year-old from Los Mochis, Sinaloa, keeps delivering in the Cardinals‘ relief corps — turning minor-league promise into major-league results.

Four Outs, Three Strikeouts — the Numbers That Matter

Four outs in a bullpen appearance is a legitimate ask. Getting three of them via strikeout against a Phillies lineup is a statement. Gastélum’s calling card is a plus-rated changeup backed by a four-seam fastball and a sinker that both sit around 94 mph — enough to keep any big-league lineup uncomfortable.

One clarification worth making: the 2.27 ERA and 0.98 WHIP circulating on social media belong to his Triple-A Memphis season, not his MLB ledger. His big-league numbers are still being written since his debut on July 8. What is fully documented from August 10 is exactly this: four outs, three strikeouts, against Philadelphia.

From Los Mochis to the Cardinals’ Bullpen

Gastélum didn’t leap straight to the majors. He signed with the Cardinals organization in April 2023 after standing out with the Cañeros de Los Mochis in the Liga Mexicana del Pacífico, then climbed four levels — Florida Complex League, Palm Beach (A), Springfield (AA), and Memphis (AAA).

The stops along the way tell the story:

  • At Double-A Springfield in 2025, he led all relievers at that level with 92 strikeouts in 62.2 innings and was named the Cardinals’ Minor League Pitcher of the Month for August.
  • At Triple-A Memphis, he posted a 7-1 record with 49 strikeouts in 43.2 innings, a 28% strikeout rate, and a walk rate of just 9.7%.
  • He put together a streak of 23 consecutive scoreless innings in Memphis before St. Louis called him up on July 8.
  • He also represented Mexico in the 2026 World Baseball Classic before his MLB debut.

Those are the numbers of a reliever who knows exactly where each pitch is going — not someone who got the call by default.

Mexican No. 155 — and Counting

When Gastélum debuted on July 8, he became the 155th Mexican-born player to appear in MLB. He joined 16 other Mexican players who had already seen action in the 2026 season. It’s a list that keeps growing, and Gastélum is making sure his name on it means something.

The Cardinals sit at 56-57 and are navigating a tough second half. Their bullpen needs to hold, and Gastélum — ranked the No. 21 prospect in the organization by MLB Pipeline — is one of the bets the front office made to help it do exactly that. August 10 was more evidence that the bet is paying off.

Four outs against the Phillies don’t close any story. They just keep moving it forward. The kid from Los Mochis is writing his one strikeout at a time.
