Christopher Ilitch is the controlling owner and person of record with Major League Baseball for the Detroit Tigers. He took formal control in 2017 following the death of his father Mike Ilitch, who had owned the club since 1992. The Tigers remain entirely within the Ilitch family structure—no institutional minority partners are publicly announced—making them one of baseball’s last fully private, single-family operations in a major market.

Who is Christopher Ilitch

Christopher Ilitch, born June 2, 1965, is 60 years old and the son of Mike and Marian Ilitch, who founded Little Caesars in 1959 with a single pizzeria in Garden City, Michigan. The chain now generates more than 5 billion dollars in annual systemwide sales. He earned a degree in business administration from the University of Michigan in 1987 and has served as president and CEO of Ilitch Holdings since 2004, after four years as co-president starting in 2000.

His name is engraved on the Stanley Cup four times for Detroit Red Wings championships in 1997, 1998, 2002, and 2008. In August 2024, he filed for divorce from Kelle Lites, whom he married in 2001. Forbes estimates the family fortune at 7.6 billion dollars as of July 14, 2026, with that figure attributed to matriarch Marian Ilitch, who ranks as the fifth wealthiest self-made woman in the United States.

How they bought the team

Mike Ilitch purchased the Tigers in 1992 from Tom Monaghan, the founder of Domino’s Pizza, for 82 million dollars. The transaction marked a notable moment in baseball history: the owner of Little Caesars buying the team from the owner of its rival pizza chain. Mike Ilitch had played minor league baseball in the Tigers organization during the 1950s before turning to pizza and eventually acquiring the franchise he once played for.

Christopher Ilitch did not purchase the team; he inherited control through succession and was formally approved by MLB as controlling owner in 2017 after his father’s death. The club has remained under Ilitch family ownership for 34 years.

What else they own

The Ilitch conglomerate controls far more than baseball. Beyond the Tigers, the family owns the Detroit Red Wings of the NHL, the MotorCity Casino Hotel, Olympia Entertainment, Little Caesars Arena, Detroit SportsNet, Blue Line Foodservice Distribution, and extensive real estate development including The District Detroit. The combined enterprise reported 3.8 billion dollars in revenues in 2018. The Tigers operate a Dominican Summer League academy as part of their Latin American player development pipeline, though exact investment figures in that operation remain unverified.

The Ilitch family is unique in North American professional sports: they are the only ownership group simultaneously controlling an MLB team and an NHL team in the same city, with their own arena included. This vertical integration gives them unusual operational flexibility that few other franchises possess.

Where the games air

In 2026, the Tigers underwent a dramatic shift in broadcast distribution. The club launched Detroit SportsNet, a regional channel owned jointly by Ilitch Sports + Entertainment and MLB Local Media, announced February 9, 2026 and debuting before the 2026 season. This replaced FanDuel Sports Network Detroit after the Tigers and eight other clubs terminated contracts with Main Street Sports Group in January 2026 due to unpaid rights fees. Detroit SportsNet is unique within MLB Local Media’s portfolio because it carries both the Tigers and the Red Wings under a single brand—normally each team operates under its own identity. In-market streaming is available through Tigers.tv for approximately 20 dollars monthly or 190 dollars annually, with cable distribution across Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio. Jason Benetti handles play-by-play duties.

  • In 2026 the Tigers broke with FanDuel Sports Network due to lack of payment and set up their own network, Detroit SportsNet, in partnership with the league: one of the few clubs that responded to the collapse of the RSNs by creating its own brand instead of just ceding production to MLB.

Where they stand among the 30 owners

List Rank
By franchise value #22 de 30
By purchase price #23 de 27
By owner’s net worth #4 de 21
By years in charge #4 de 30

Amounts are nominal and not adjusted for inflation: comparing a decades-old purchase price with today’s valuation overstates the real gain.

The Tigers rank 22nd among the 30 MLB franchises by current valuation at 1.8 billion dollars—a figure that represents a 16 percent year-over-year increase. The club is worth 22 times what the Ilitch family paid for it in 1992 (nominal dollars, unadjusted for inflation). Among all 30 owners, the Ilitch family ranks fourth in tenure, having stewarded the franchise through more than three decades of ownership. The 2025 payroll stood at 187 million dollars against revenues of 363 million dollars and operating income of 27 million dollars.
