Beltran had spent years navigating that same reality himself. He took the Pineda incident as his opening and went straight to the Commissioner’s office and the MLBPA to push for a formal solution. It wasn’t a one-man campaign — it was an institutional negotiation that took nearly two full seasons to close.

Starting with the 2016 season, MLB issued the directive: every one of its 30 clubs had to employ a full-time Spanish interpreter. To ease the financial friction, the league earmarked $65,000 per team — money already sitting in a pool collected from penalties on teams that exceeded international signing bonus limits. No new funds needed; just a smarter redirect.
The need was hard to argue with. Roughly 25% of MLB Opening Day rosters are made up of Spanish-speaking players, meaning that in any given big-league dugout, one in four players was navigating press conferences, medical conversations, and tactical meetings in a language they didn’t fully command.
Implementation wasn’t seamless — reports from 2018 indicated that clubs like the Kansas City Royals were still not fully compliant — but the legal framework existed, and that shifted the leverage for players and their agents when pushing for proper support.
Beltran’s Legacy, By the Numbers
On the field, Beltran retired with 2,725 hits, 435 home runs, and a .279 batting average. He made 9 All-Star teams, won 3 Gold Gloves, and earned a World Series ring with the 2017 Houston Astros. In the postseason, he posted a 1.021 OPS across 65 games — one of the most impressive October résumés in recent memory.
Off the field, the interpreter initiative — alongside the baseball academy he founded in Puerto Rico — helped earn him the Roberto Clemente Award in 2013. And in 2026, the BBWAA voted him into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown with 84.2% of the vote, a number that carried the weight of everything he did between the lines and beyond them.
Today Beltran serves as a Special Assistant to the New York Mets front office under David Stearns. Interpreters are now a fixture in every MLB clubhouse.
