82 RBI and Three Straight Seasons: Isaac Paredes Joins Vinny Castilla on the Shortest List in Mexican Baseball History
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

With a two-run home run off Cristopher Sánchez on September 9, 2026, Isaac Paredes reached 82 RBI on the season and completed his third consecutive year with 80 or more runs batted in. The Hermosillo native, now with the Houston Astros, just entered a club that has exactly two members in all of MLB history: him and Vinny Castilla.

That’s not hyperbole. That’s what the record book says.

The Shortest List in Mexican Baseball

Castilla did it seven times. During his golden run with the Colorado Rockies from 1995 to 1999, he averaged 112 RBI per season and peaked at 144 in 1998, hitting .319 with 46 home runs. Different era, different league, different context — and for nearly three decades, no Mexican-born player came close to matching that kind of sustained production.

Paredes now has three. He drove in 98 runs with Tampa Bay in 2023 while hitting 31 home runs. In 2024, split between the Rays and the Cubs, he posted 80 RBI across 153 games. And in 2026 with Houston, he hit No. 82 before September 9 was even over.

The list of Mexican-born players with three or more 80-RBI seasons in MLB history:

  • 🇲🇽 Vinny Castilla — 7 times
  • 🇲🇽 Isaac Paredes — 3 times

That’s the entire list.

How Someone Who Doesn’t Hit Hard Still Produces

Home run No. 19 on September 9 was a two-run shot to left-center in the third inning that put Houston up 3-0. The Astros eventually lost 11-7 — Kyle Schwarber‘s sixth-inning grand slam was the backbreaker — but Paredes’ moment stood on its own.

What makes Paredes statistically fascinating is the gap between what he produces and how he does it. His average exit velocity sits at 86.1 mph (10th percentile in MLB). His hard-hit rate is 28.3% (7th percentile). By traditional power metrics, he has no business driving in 80-plus runs a year.

And yet: .260 AVG, .360 OBP, .787 OPS across 591 plate appearances in 2026. An OPS+ of 120, meaning he’s been 20% better than the average MLB hitter this season.

Statcast explains the paradox: Paredes squares the ball up at an elite rate (71st percentile in squared-up rate), almost never whiffs (93rd percentile in contact rate, 91st in strikeout rate), and lays off bad pitches (63rd percentile in chase discipline). He doesn’t need to hit the ball hard if he almost never misses it.

Where the Astros Stand

Context matters. Houston entered September 9 at 74-71, fighting for an American League Wild Card spot. In that race, Paredes has been the most consistent bat in the lineup: 82 RBI in 139 games, the team’s most reliable run producer on the year.

His 2026 contract is worth $9.35 million, with a team option for 2027. If the Astros pick it up, they do so knowing they have the second-most productive Mexican-born hitter per season in MLB history on their roster. If they don’t, Paredes heads toward arbitration in 2027 and free agency in 2028 with a résumé Castilla himself would have signed off on.

The Numbers Behind the Production

Here’s what Statcast has on Paredes through the 2026 season:

  • 591 plate appearances
  • 19 home runs, 82 RBI
  • AVG: .260 | OBP: .360 | OPS: .787 | OPS+: 120
  • xwOBA: .322
  • Average exit velocity: 86.1 mph
  • Barrel rate: 4.9%
  • Hard-hit rate: 28.3%
  • Average bat speed: 67.2 mph

How those numbers rank across MLB:

  • Bat speed: 2nd percentile
  • Exit velocity: 10th percentile
  • Hard-hit rate: 7th percentile
  • Contact (whiff rate): 93rd percentile — elite
  • Sprint speed: 7th percentile

The numbers don’t lie: Isaac Paredes is not built like a run producer. He just keeps producing runs. And in baseball, the record book doesn’t care how you do it — only that you do.
