Aaron Judge is on the injured list again. The New York Yankees placed their captain on the 10-day IL on September 18 with a right calf strain — his second stint on the shelf this season — and when manager Aaron Boone was asked whether Judge would be available for the postseason, the answer was blunt: «I don’t know.»
That’s a problem. New York is heading into October as a Wild Card team that ranked 28th in runs scored and 28th in OPS during Judge’s absences this year. And right now, nobody knows if he’ll be in the lineup when it matters most.
The Second Breakdown in the Same Season
Judge had only just returned from a stress fracture in his right first rib — an injury he suffered diving for a ball in late April that cost him 83 games. His comeback lasted six and a half games. In that stretch he went 4-for-26 (.154 average) with 13 strikeouts and just one extra-base hit.
On Wednesday against the Red Sox, he left the game in the sixth inning with leg tightness. An MRI on Thursday in Phoenix confirmed the right calf strain.
Boone spoke to reporters in Phoenix before the series against the Arizona Diamondbacks and left no room for optimism: «I don’t know. I don’t have a timeline for him. He’s on the IL. I’m not going to predict anything,» the manager said, per ESPN and MLB.com on September 18.
The IL stint can be backdated to Thursday, which would theoretically make Judge eligible for the final regular-season game on September 27 — but Boone himself dismissed making any projections.
A Captain Who’s Barely Played in 2026
In all of 2026, Judge has appeared in just 66 games. The two previous seasons — when he won back-to-back American League MVP awards in 2024 and 2025 — he played more than 150 games each year.
Before the rib injury, he was slashing .248 with 17 home runs and 38 RBI in 59 games. His full 2026 line — .241 AVG and an .871 OPS in 285 plate appearances — is solid given the context, but what matters now is whether his body holds up long enough to reach October.
Yankees Heading to the Wild Card Without Their Best Bat
New York has already clinched a postseason berth and holds a six-game lead over the Boston Red Sox for the top AL Wild Card spot. A Wild Card Series matchup between those two clubs looks increasingly likely — which makes the uncertainty around Judge even more pressing.
The offense without him is a different animal. During his rib-injury absence, the Yankees ranked 28th in runs, 28th in OPS, and dead last (30th) in team batting average across all of MLB.
Ben Rice has carried the lineup with a team-leading 38 home runs, and Cody Bellinger is contributing a .276 average with 16 home runs and 71 RBI — but there’s no direct replacement for a hitter who, when healthy, anchors the lineup from the top of the order.
The situation gets thornier because Giancarlo Stanton is also dealing with a calf issue and has played just 24 games all season. Two of the Yankees’ three most dangerous bats arriving at October with the same injury in the same body part is the kind of coincidence no contending team wants to be living with.

The bat is still elite when he’s in the box. The question is whether he’ll get the chance to use it in October.
