Aaron Judge was back in the Yankees lineup on September 8, 2026 — 99 days after fracturing a rib. He played six innings, went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts, and was lifted by manager Aaron Boone. He wasn’t happy about it, and he said so straight up in the postgame session: «I feel great, I played half a game.»
Heliot Ramos stepped in, hit a three-run homer in the eighth, and New York beat the Colorado Rockies 5-3. Not the storybook return Judge probably had in mind — but the Yankees won, and that’s the part that matters most right now.
The Numbers Behind the Return
Judge’s night on the box score — zero hits, two strikeouts, a flyout — doesn’t tell you much. His numbers before the injury do. In 59 games this season, the Yankees captain was slashing .248/.375/.908 with 17 home runs and 38 RBI. While he was out, New York went 45-39 and ranked 26th in the majors in runs scored. The gap explains itself.
The team’s offensive splits make it even clearer: without Judge in the lineup, the Yankees hit .227 with an OPS of .681. With him in there, those numbers jump to .243 and .770. That’s the difference between a team that competes and one that controls games.
Boone had already told reporters before first pitch that Judge wouldn’t go nine innings. «I’m going to be mindful of that, especially this first week,» the manager said. A reasonable call for a player coming back from a rib fracture with zero minor-league rehab appearances. Judge, being Judge, didn’t experience it quite so calmly.
He also made it clear the desire to return wasn’t new: «I wanted to come back a couple months ago, but I’m not a trainer. So I gotta check whatever boxes they got.» Contained frustration — not a conflict. That distinction matters.
Ramos Came In and Handled It
With Judge out of right field in the seventh, Ramos took over. In the eighth, with runners on base, he drove one to right-center — a three-run homer that pushed the lead to 5-1. It was his second home run as a Yankee since arriving from the San Francisco Giants at the August 3 trade deadline.
Judge credited him without hesitation: «That’s where my guy Ramos came in and picked me up and hit a nice little three-run homer there to put the game out.» That’s not someone bitter about being pulled. That’s someone who wanted to keep playing and still recognized the team came through without him on the field.
Cam Schlittler was excellent on the mound — seven innings, one run, three hits, and 10 strikeouts. He leads the American League with a 2.01 ERA and sits second in WHIP at 0.92. Colorado trimmed it to 5-3 in the ninth, but the damage was already done.
Yankees at 20 Over .500 With Judge Back
The win moved New York to 82-62, matching their best record of the season at 20 games over .500. They lead the AL Wild Card with the postseason essentially locked up and a Subway Series against the Mets looming on the near horizon.
Boone has already said he might give Judge a day off in one of the next two games. The return won’t flip a switch overnight. But the question was never whether Judge can play — he answered that himself. The real question is how much Boone and the medical staff will let him play before October arrives.
