Yankees Rookie George Lombard Jr. Hits Grand Slam, Second-Youngest in Franchise History to Do It

Two outs, bases loaded, third inning. George Lombard Jr. stepped into the box at Yankee Stadium and ended a drought that had been building all season long. One swing off Tomoyuki Sugano’s 86.6 mph slider — a 353-foot shot that wrapped around the right-field foul pole — and the Yankees finally had their first grand slam of 2026. Final score: 6-1 over the Colorado Rockies.

At 21 years and 99 days old, Lombard is now the second-youngest Yankee ever to hit a grand slam in franchise history. The only player ahead of him? Mickey Mantle, who did it twice in four days back in July 1952 — at age 20. To find someone younger than Lombard on that list, you have to go back 74 years and land on one of the greatest hitters who ever lived.

A Team That Couldn’t Hit One All Year

Before Lombard’s blast, the Yankees were one of just two teams in all of MLB without a grand slam in 2026 — the Milwaukee Brewers being the other. Getting to September without one of the most impactful plays in the game says something about how offensive fortune was distributed across the roster all year. Lombard erased that footnote in a single at-bat.

The setup was almost too cinematic. Aaron Judge — playing just his second game back after fracturing a rib — led off with a single to right. Luis García Jr. followed with a double. Spencer Jones drew a walk. Two outs, bases loaded, and a 21-year-old rookie with 28 big-league games to his name standing in the box.

A Month In, Already Making History

Lombard made his MLB debut on August 4, 2026 — exactly one month before this game. The grand slam was his third home run in the majors. His first two came with the bases empty. This one came with all three occupied and the season tightening by the day. The difference between a home run and a grand slam isn’t just numbers — it’s context. Lombard picked the best possible moment to hit his first one.

The family backstory only adds to it. His father, George Lombard Sr., is the bench coach for the Detroit Tigers and played six seasons in the big leagues. His brother Jacob is one of the more talked-about prospects from the 2026 Draft. Baseball isn’t something this family stumbled into.

Judge and Warren Also Delivered

The grand slam was the headline, but New York had more contributors in the 6-1 win. Judge went 2-for-4 with two singles in eight innings — not flashy, but enough to confirm the captain is back and moving freely in right field.

On the mound, Will Warren made another strong case to be New York’s No. 5 starter in the postseason rotation: six innings, one run, four hits, eight strikeouts, two walks. He improved to 10-6 on the season.

The Yankees moved to 83-62 and have now won 15 of their last 22 games — a September pace that holds up under real pressure. Sugano, meanwhile, dropped to 12-9 after his fourth consecutive loss: six innings, five runs allowed on just four hits. Four Yankees hits were all it took.

What the Numbers Say About Lombard Jr.

The traditional stats don’t fully capture where Lombard is right now. His Statcast profile through 2026 tells a more complete story:

  • 103 plate appearances in 2026
  • 3 home runs, 11 RBI
  • AVG: .239 | OPS: .649
  • xwOBA: .283 — what his quality of contact suggests he should be producing
  • Average exit velocity: 85.5 mph
  • Barrel rate: 6.3%
  • Hard-hit rate: 34.4% (balls hit 95 mph or harder)
  • Sprint speed: 95th percentile — elite by any measure

The surface numbers are modest. The underlying profile is that of a player still finding his footing — but with the athleticism and raw tools to grow into something considerably more dangerous. Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium was a preview of what that might look like.
